Fort Mamula is part of a big Austro-Hungarian military strategy and represents only a small part of a great history. The most attractive and famous fort is just one from more than 70 forts that exists in Boka bay and mountains around. Forts were built from the 1831 until the 1914 in five stages. Fort Mamula was built in the second stage in 1853. It is located on the island Lastavica and together with fortification at Prevlaka peninsula and fort Arza at Lustica peninsula fort Mamula had role to keep the entrance of the bay safe and prevent enemies to enter the bay. The Island Lastavica itself has round shape so the fort follows the shape of the island and is built in the circle. Name Mamula comes from General Lazar von Mamula who has built this fort.
Unfortunately this fort also has a sad part of the history and caries a sad story. During the Second World War Italian fascist forces converted fort into a concentration camp. It was a revenge by Italian Kingdom because of Montenegrin uprising against fascism in July 1941. More than 2000 men, women and children were kept in captivity and were tortured. Since the 14th of September in 1943 when Italy capitulated fort was abandoned and didn’t have any use for a long period of time. Just attracted curious eyes by its location and architectural design.
Today the fort has a new role and is being used again. A new generation of people will visit the fort and admire its magnificence. They will find their pleasure and rest in it. The fort was turned into a luxury Island hotel. On our boat tour you will have the opportunity to see the fort and the island close up and revive all her roles during the history and time.
