
Our Lady of the Rocks
Kotor and Kotor bay has rich and very old history.The islet Our Lady of the Rocks and town Perast are the best preserved wholes of this part of Adriatic and together with natural island St. George represent big part of Boka bay history. Use opportunity and visit church on the islet which is one of the most important monuments in Bokabay.

After finding the icon Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea people from Perast decided to build a small chapel on that spot. They laid rocks and sank old ships to make this charming islet and chapel on it.
Today church was built by Venetians in 1630. Every year on the 22nd of July people from Perastgo to the island in boats decorated with laurel and carry stones that they throw around the island in order to preserve it forever. This traditional event is calledFašinada.
The church contains a large number of handicrafts, archeological collections and works of art by the famous Kotor painter Tripo Kokolja, as well as the icon of Our Lady of the Rocks which was made by Lovro Dobričević in 1452.

The church also preserves evidence of a sad love story. Visitors to this church can see an unusual tapestry, which Jacinta Kunić-Mijović made during 25 years of waiting for her loved one to return from the sea, and in which she wove parts of her hair, golden in her youth and silver in her old age. She started working on the tapestry in 1803 and finished it in 1828.
It is unknown if her loved one ever returned from the sea, but she was left blind at the end of her work. The tapestry is so precisely made that there are about 650 needle stitches on one square centimeter.
