
Perast
Perast is for sure the smallest town you will ever visit and immediately fall in love with. Just one street along the sea less than two kilometers long offers beauty and rich history on every centimeter. Perast is town centuries old and hides many stories of different peoples who lived there.

The first people who lived in Perast were Illyrians whose queen Teuta sent them from near town Risan to live in Perast and make better protection of the bay. Those Illyrians were the tribe Pirusta after whom Perast got its name.
Over centuries Perast played an important role in the defense of the bay due to its location but never had ramparts like Kotor. Perasts defense system was built between XV and XVII century. Fort “Sveti Krst” above the town on the hill St. Ilija and ten small towers distributed around town. The rests of the fort are visible today but almost all towers were destroyed during the time. Across the town there is the narrowest point in Boka bay, the strait called Verige. The strait got its name from the big chains that people of Perast placed there in order to slow down the entry of enemy ships into Boka.

Perast was always a maritime town. In the 1330 Perast had shipyard that worked until the 1813th. One of the most famous maritime schools was in Perast. On the recommendation of Venice, Peter the Great sent the sons of famous noble families to Perast to be trained by the famous mathematician and navigator Marko Martinovic. Even Perast got a shipyard it was still only a fishing village. Progress in trade was slow until the 15th century and the arrival of Venice, when Perast finally received the status of a city.
Perast was under the rule of the powerful Venetian Republic for almost three centuries, from 1482 until the fall of the republic in 1797. Venice provided protection to Perast and Boka bay, and excellent Boka sailors sailed under the Venetian flag for almost 300 years and defended Boka from frequent attacks by Ottoman pirates.

Town has more than 300 houses, more than 200 of them are palaces built by important families. One of the palaces today is used like a museum. Also has 18 churches, the main one is church St. Nikola which is located on the main square called “Pjaca”. Church has tower 55 meters high, the main sign of Perast.
